Linus Torvalds turned the project over to Junio Hamano (a major contributor) after its original v0.99 release, and Junio remains the core maintainer of the project. In the early-to-mid 2000s, there were a plethora of license complaints, and in 2005, the free version of BitKeeper was removed. It offered a free license for open-source projects, with the stipulation that developers could not create a competing tool while using BitKeeper plus one additional year. Created in 1998, BitKeeper was spun up to solve some of the growing pains of Linux. While most of us remember Git as the first distributed version control system, before Git, there was BitKeeper, a proprietary source control management system. With SVN, your data is stored on a central server, and any time you check it out, you're checking out a single version of the repository. Unlike Git, it is centralized rather than distributed. Before distributed systems, subversion (SVN) was a popular way to manage code version control. Git is a version control system that is distributed, which means that it uses multiple local repositories, including a centralized repo and server. So, I decided to bite the bullet and learn what is going on under that magical hood. Do I rebase, or do I merge? What is the use case for a force push? There have definitely been a few occasions when a wrong Git command turned into a big deal. :) Regardless, I often find myself being scared of certain Git commands. When I started to research for this post, I almost fell out of my chair when I read that Git was created in 2005. If you're like me and have less than fifteen years of software engineering experience, the thought of a world without Git doesn't seem possible. Down here in the south "GOD's country", we don't need to have a ten page report on how to do something.Ruby (170) Honeybadger (76) Rails (50) JavaScript (35) PHP (24) Python (16) Laravel (14) Briefing (13) DevOps (9) Go (9) Elixir (8) Briefing 2021 Q3 (7) FounderQuest (6) Briefing 2021 Q2 (6) Node (6) Aws (6) Django (6) Conferences (5) Security (4) Developer Tools (4) Testing (4) Heroku (3) Debugging (3) Docker (3) Events (2) Jekyll (2) Startup Advice (2) Guest Post (2) Sidekiq (2) Serverless (2) Git (2) Front End (2) Rspec (2) Elastic Beanstalk (2) Oauth (2) React (2) Logging (2) Case Studies (1) Performance (1) Allocation Stats (1) Integrations (1) Bitbucket (1) Mobile (1) Gophercon (1) Clients (1) Vue (1) Lambda (1) Turbolinks (1) Redis (1) CircleCI (1) GitHub (1) Crystal (1) Stripe (1) Saas (1) Graphql (1) Elasticsearch (1) Import Maps (1) Build Systems (1) Minitest (1) Guzzle (1) Tdd (1) I18n (1) Github Actions (1) Sql (1) Postgresql (1) Xdebug (1) Zend Debugger (1) Phpdbg (1) Pdf (1) Multithreading (1) Concurrency (1) Web Workers (1) Fargate (1) Websockets (1) Markdown (1) Active Record (1) Django Q (1) Celery (1) Amazon S3 (1) Aws Lambda (1) Amazon Textract (1) Sucrase (1) Babel (1) Me: It's GIT IT DONE you moronic, imbred piece of shit! 3.Ī phrase used by southern men and women, and Larry, by the way who has made more money than most of the morans writing these definitions, as a form of talk just like every other group of people around the USA has choosen for their pleasure. Fortunately, however, most Americans aren't attracted to this horrid slang term, and the majority of us still say "git it done" (or get it done, in proper written form.)Ī white trash Southerner: GIT ER DUUUNNN!! What nearly everyone in the nation says instead of that retarded, southern redneck term Git R Dun (or Git Er Done).įirst widely introduced by Larry The Cable Guy, Git R Dun was apparently an attempt to further destroy the English language, and in an effort to make some Americans a little bit dumber and more irritating. It's shocking that most people, fortunately still say git it done (or get it done), even inspite of the TV satellite and cable access to the retarded slang coined by the infamous redneck Larry the Cable Guy. In addition it is what the majority of all people in America say instead of that mangled distortion known as Git R Dun.Įven George W. This is the standard phrase that is used for completing a task, to have sex with a girl, make a smart purchase, etc. (Other spellings include Get R Dun, Git-r-dun, and Git Er Done.) The proper term that everyone else uses instead of the pro-Southern rednecks and the imbred types that say Git R Dun.
